Former England footballer Carlton Palmer has revealed he had a “suspected small heart attack” during the first mile of a half marathon – which he completed.
The midfielder tweeted that he was “being kept in hospital” and “tests are ongoing”.
In an earlier tweet, the 57-year-old said his heart “played up again in the first mile” of the Sheffield Half Marathon but he “managed to complete the course”.
He had a lengthy operation for a heart condition in 2016.
Palmer also posted a picture of his stats as he ran the 13.1 mile course, showing his maximum heart rate was 232 beats per minute.
He got round in two hours and nine minutes.
His wife, Lucy Kirkby-Palmer, tweeted that her husband, who played for a number of clubs including West Brom, Leeds, Southampton and Nottingham Forest, was not in her “good books”.
She added: “Running after a 230 heart rate! Not sure what you were thinking!”
Palmer replied: “Sorry, love you.”
Alan Shearer tweeted: “Hope you’re ok pal.”
Palmer later tweeted: “Thank you so much for all the lovely messages. I have been kept in hospital with a suspected small heart attack.
“They want to find out what has caused this problem so tests are ongoing.
“I will keep you updated. Gutted – I was flying to Portugal at 4pm with (his wife).
