Five children among nine dead as gunman opens fire at Russian school

At least 13 people – including five children – have been killed during a shooting at a school in the Russian city of Izhevsk.

The Russian Investigative Committee said the victims included five children, two teachers and two security guards.

Other reports said 20 people had also been injured.

Russian state-owned news agency TASS reported 13 people had died.

The Udmurtia branch of the interior ministry said the body of the gunman was discovered by police at the scene.

The motive for the shootings was unclear.

The school has been evacuated and the surrounding area cordoned off.

More on Russia

Governor of Udmurtia, Alexander Brechalov, said that the still unidentified gunman had shot himself.

Izhevsk is about 600 miles east of Moscow and is the capital of the Udmurtia region.

News agency RIA cited the governor as saying that an unidentified man had entered the school and killed a security guard.

He said that there were dead and wounded among the school students.

The school has about 1,000 pupils in a city of more than 600,000 people.

Russia has seen several school shootings in recent years.

In May 2021, a teenage gunman killed seven children and two adults in the city of Kazan.

Last April, a man killed two children and a teacher at a kindergarten in the central Ulyanovsk region before committing suicide.
