Alec Baldwin facing new lawsuit from relatives of cinematographer who was killed

Alec Baldwin is facing a new civil lawsuit from relatives of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Ms Hutchins died in October 2021 after a prop gun, held by Baldwin, went off on set while the film Rust was being made in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Hollywood actor is being sued for alleged battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and loss of consortium.

Loss of consortium is when a plaintiff seeks to recover compensation for damages to certain relationships on which they are mutually dependent.

The Rust movie production company is included in the lawsuit.

High-profile US lawyer Gloria Allred, who will represent the family, announced the new lawsuit at a news conference on Thursday.

Ms Allred said: “It’s clear to us that the relationships of all of our clients have been damaged, and that they will not be able to enjoy life in the same way as they did when their precious Halyna was alive.

More on Alec Baldwin

“Halyna was the light in their lives. Of course, for all of our three clients, that tragic loss of their daughter and sister is heartbreaking.”

In a separate proceeding, Baldwin is set to appear in US court for the first time on 24 February to face criminal charges that stem from the incident.

Alongside Rust’s armourer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, he faces two charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Alec Baldwin’s lawyers have filed to disqualify the special prosecutor on the case due to, what they call, her “unconstitutional” role as a politician.
