‘It’s sadly a rumour’: Ruth Jones refutes Gavin & Stacey comeback reports

Actress Ruth Jones has said the widely reported Gavin and Stacey Christmas special is “sadly a rumour”.

US entertainment news website, Deadline, claimed the show would be back for a Christmas special this year after a five-year break.

But speaking to Oliver Callan on RTE Radio 1 on Wednesday, the co-writer of the show, largely filmed in South Wales, said: “If there was something to say on that front, James [Corden] and I would happily announce it”.

The show, starring Matthew Horne and Joanna Page as Gavin and Stacey, ran for three series from 2007, before returning for a Christmas special in 2019.

As well as being the show’s co-writers, Corden and Jones star alongside them as their respective best friends Smithy and Nessa.

The remainder of the ensemble cast included Alison Steadman, Larry Lamb, Rob Brydon and Melanie Walters.

Responding to a claim in The Sun that the BBC and Netflix were in a bidding war for the show, Jones asked: “Where’s this come from?”

“When he [Corden] came back from America, we went for lunch in London a few months ago and we got papped,” she added.

“And then the next thing is ‘Oh my god, they must be writing more Gavin and Stacey’, which is lovely. It’s lovely that people love it and they’re so desperate for it.”

The BBC declined to comment.
